After such a difficult time dealing with recent copyright infringement issues, making heart-shaped ornaments ahead of this year's Christmas season has been an enjoyable and uplifting task. This year I'm applying a thick, glossy coat of resin to each one to add extra shine and protection when hung on display. The downside is that it takes at least 24 hours to dry, so it's time-consuming but absolutely worth it. Gold leaf and glitter makes for an especially striking effect under resin! Copper and gold leaf on 'By Your Side'

'By Your Side' features a blue tabby with gittering gold leaf eyes next to a fluffy gold kitten. It has a luxurious background of resin-coated copper leaf.  Copper leaf turns out to be a bit trickier to work with than gold leaf - it seems harder to transfer from the wax paper onto the canvas. But the effect is stunning, and I particularly like the contrast against blue colours, like in this painting. I've been experimenting with new techniques recently, including applying resin (a two-part epoxy resin system from Pebeo), gold leaf and enamel-effect paint to my artwork. In particular I've been trying out my experiments on ornaments (which had proved to be a huge success at Christmas so I've decided to continue making them year-round).
